ELCHE,
CULTURAL CITY

Elche combines the dynamism of a modern city with all of its historical and cultural heritage

There are many archaeological sites in the area along with monuments from bygone eras, as well as the festivities and traditions that coexist with an entire annual cultural agenda, a focal point for international and national visitors.

The biggest festivities of Elche take place in August, with the Misteri d’Elx, the famous Nit de l’Albá, the Pobladores (Settlers) and the Moors and the Christians. And other important festivities such as the Venida de la Virgen (Coming of the Virgin) in December and Holy Week, with its Palm Sunday that is of International Tourist Interest. However we can say that there are always celebrations going on in Elche right through the year, in the different districts, churches and villages.

Elche has a great history; but it is living history. That is why with the passing of the years the city has grown over the buildings and streets of times gone by and past civilisations. But we can still find monuments of its great past as we peacefully stroll around its city centre: the remains of the Moorish and medieval walls that flank the banks of the river, the Alcázar de la Señoría or the Palace of Altamira, the magnificent Calahorra tower, the Arab Baths, the Gothic style City Hall, which is one of the oldest in the Valencian Community, the Calendura Tower, the Rennaissance Convento de la Merced, the Santa María Basilica with its beautiful doorway, a Baroque treasure, the convent of San José…
